What’s Your Style?

Have you ever surveyed your interior space and wondered how exactly to describe your own aesthetic? There are several interior design styles out there and whether your taste leans toward a single style or a mixture of styles, identifying the characteristics you gravitate toward will help you when making future design decisions. Knowing that style that fits the way you live and feel in your own home is key to designing without regretting.

I myself appreciate several styles. I love my friends’ and family’s homes, and their range of décor, but it doesn’t necessarily mean their aesthetic is right for my own space.

Here are some design styles and characteristics that will help you navigate the direction and look you want for your home. And keep in mind, you can have multiple styles that work and don’t equate to an eclectic vibe.

Contemporary & Modern:

Many confuse contemporary with modern. They are not the same. Contemporary takes from modern but leans towards what is current, whereas modern style stays true to historical and iconic design.

Contemporary Characteristics:

  • Oversized artwork

  • More masculine styling

  • Finishes such as chrome, steel & glass

  • Neutral color palette

  • Low, sleek furnishings

Modern Characteristics:

  • Clean lines

  • Geometric shapes

  • Emphasis on function

  • Intentional asymmetry (oversized windows with smaller windows)o Natural materials and neutral colors such as grey

GLam:

Think Hollywood with bold statement pieces, shine, sparkles, and mirrors. Your furniture has lots of intricate details and you love accessories. This style tends to be more feminine

Glam Characteristics:

  • Jewel toned color palette

  • Brass & Crystal chandeliers

  • Lucite, lacquered and brass furnishings

  • Luxe materials such as velvet and fur

Transitional:

Transitional style marries traditional and modern. I would dare to say this is the most popular design style because it looks timeless and is practical. It’s an updated version of classics and leans towards masculine and feminine. This style incorporates sentimental hand-me-down pieces with metallics and statement pieces.

Transitional Characteristics:

  • Emphasis on comfort and function

  • Mixes antiques with new pieces

  • Neutral tones with pops of color

  • Few Accessories

  • Soft, high-performance fabrics

  • Textures and layering

Without all the other interior styles presented, I lean toward my home being more transitional and contemporary with little touches of modern and very little glam (I love velvet).
